Using Containers in Tableau

Raise your hand if you have tried using containers in tableau and have been frustrated. I am hear to tell you that you are not the only one. Containers are really useful blocks in which you can insert any tableau object and it not only helps with keeping your dashboard organized but also helps with how your dashboard looks on different screens. However tableau acts finicky when you try to use containers within containers. Here are some simple tricks to help you work with multiple containers –

  • Decide what type of container your outermost container needs to be – does it need to have objects placed vertically stacked on top of each other or does it need to be placed horizontally next to each other. Based on this decision choose your type of container
  • Once you have placed this container select the background shade of this container to differentiate it from the rest of your dashboard.
  • Before you decide place your next container within the orginial container put a text box as a place holder within the orginal container. This place holder text box really helps placing your next container without any issues.
  • For each new container you insert choose a different background color to clearly differentiate the container. Use placeholders accordingly in between wherever needed.
